The structure of flowers in avocado is a very curious issue. Because the avocado flower is a different structure than most fruit trees. In this case, the fertilization biology of the avocado tree is quite different compared to other trees. Avocado flowers have both male and female organs. This is called the “hermaphrodite structure.” These organs are not active at the same time. The flowers show a two-way opening. Each of the avocado flowers shows female characteristics at the first moment of opening. The male organs are not active at this stage. This state of flowers is called the “female period”. Then the flower closes and is closed all night. The next day the same flower blooms again. At this stage, the tooth crown has darkened and started to dry out, the female organs are no longer active and the male organs are emitting flower powder. This phase of flowers is also called the “male period”. This condition is scientifically called “Synchronous dichotomy”.

In avocado type a varieties, the flower passes to the female stage in the morning of the first day, the next day, late in the day or in the afternoon. In type B varieties, the flower is in the female phase on the first day of the afternoon, and when it closes at night and reopens the next morning, it is in the male phase.

In the garden plant, it is recommended to plant a and B types of varieties that overlap flowering times together because this increases the yield considerably. However, despite having the same flower structure, it has been observed that they can fertilize each other due to the time difference in the opening of the flowers. For example; in some gardens, Zutano variety with type B flower structure can be used as fertilizer of Fuerte variety with type B flower structure.

As a result, for a successful and highly efficient production, varieties with a and B type flower structure must be planted in the appropriate order while the avocado garden is being established. In addition, since avocado flower powders are carried by flying insects, the insect activity in the garden will also affect the yield.
